Dual Cab Ute Tray Canopy Guide

Having to choose from a wide range of configurations and the option to drive on any terrain without any issues is what utes are known for. A ute looks like a pickup truck but it is more versatile than one. Utes are meant to provide the comfort of a sedan and the storage space of a pickup truck. This is why they are commonly used by tradespeople. But utes aren’t just made for tradesmen.

Their versatility extends into the level of customisation you get when it comes to their cab design. Dual cab utes are quite common between the masses because they offer a balanced mix of a sedan and a pickup truck. Dual cab utes offer enough space for four people to sit inside while having more room for more luggage than a regular car. Dual cab utes are also pairable with tray canopies which makes them even more convenient of an option.

Dual Cab Tray Canopy Materials

Aluminium

The most popular material option for dual cab tray canopies is metal. There are two types of metals tray canopies are made of and aluminium is the lighter, more durable option. An aluminium dual cab tray canopy is still quite strong and it comes with better corrosion protection which is part of the material’s construction rather than a layer that’s being added onto it.

Steel

A dual cab ute canopy made of steel is a lot stronger than one made of aluminium but also a lot heavier. The impact resistance steel canopies offer can’t be matched by any other tray canopy but steel canopies are not as good at keeping corrosion off. Even when coated with a protective layer they are still not a better option since this layer needs to be maintained in order for the corrosion protection to stay.

Fibreglass

If you want a light but strong ute canopy without the need for heavy maintenance, go with one made of fibreglass. Although fibreglass dual cab canopies can’t support a lot of weight, when it comes to bumps and dings they are outstanding. You won’t be able to put roof fracks on them but you will be able to get the same properties as steel without the hassle that comes with it.

Canvas

The lightest and most affordable ute tray canopy you will find is one made of canvas. While you don’t get the same level of protection you get with steel or aluminium canopies, canvas canopies are quite convenient when it comes to easy access. This more flexible alternative also makes it easy to remove the canopy when you don’t need it.

Types of Dual Cab Tray Canopies

Flat

A flat tray dual cab ute canopy mainly comes made of aluminium. Usually, these dual cab canopies come with fold-down removable sides. A flat tray is your best solution when you want a lightweight solution that makes it easy to load stuff onto it. You also don’t need to use a tub liner with a flat tray canopy. Keep in mind though that flat tray canopies provide no protection or containment, so if you want to carry something valuable you’re better off with something else.

Factory Tub

What is known as a tray canopy with sides is called a factory tub canopy. Again, many of them come made of aluminium with the canopy being a standard option on most utes nowadays. Factory tub tray canopies are mainly open-top steel tubs that come with solid sides and a drop-down tailgate.

This type of dual cab tray canopy offers decent containment but no protection from the elements or prying eyes. You can load loose items on them but they do offer only one point of access and that is the rear. If you remove the sides a factory tub becomes a flat tray.

Chassis Mount

Installing a chassis mount dual cab ute canopy is preferred when you want a long term solution. This is because chassis mount canopies bolt directly onto the chassis of your ute. Because a chassis mount canopy is built stronger from the base and up, it is sturdier and stronger. Keep in mind though that they can be removed but it takes quite some time to do so. If you want a canopy that you will remove and install quite often then avoid getting a chassis mount canopy.

Service Body

The most common canopy you see on government vehicles is known as a service body canopy. This type of canopy is typically made of steel and is quite a big one too. Service body canopies often come with multiple large gull-wing doors.

With these canopies you can store a lot of gear and equipment, making them the perfect solution for camping or your tradie life. Service body canopies are quite strong and can keep your items safe especially if you equip one with an alarm and proper weather seals.

Having no canopy is an option for many ute owners but why would you want to miss out on your vehicle’s core function – versatility? Even if you go with the most straightforward tray canopy you’re still better off than not getting any at all. You never know when you’ll need extra space.
